On October 30, 2015, the Center for Agribusiness and Rural Development Foundation held the official opening ceremony of the new Farm and Veterinary Service Center in Vardenis, Gegharkunik. This is the second center established in that province through the USAID-funded Development of Private Extension Service System in Armenia (DPESSA) project.
“The U.S. government is committed to partnering with all sectors of Armenia. And the agriculture sector is one of the most vital and important economic sectors in the country,” Ambassador Mills said at the event. “We at the Embassy, mostly through our USAID programs, are committed to working with Armenian farmers and livestock owners to ensure they have the tools they need to compete and prosper in the local and regional agriculture markets,” he noted.
Similar to the center in Hayravank (Gegharkunik), the center in Vardenis will share the latest farm business techniques with the local veterinarians, farmers, and agricultural businesses. The center’s workshops and training programs plan to reach about 2,000 farmers from Vardenis and six neighboring communities. In addition to the veterinary services, the center will also help locals gain access to financial services and will provide leasing opportunities and at least 250 loans to farmers and rural enterprises to expand their equipment base and increase production.
USAID assistance programs in the agriculture sector of Armenia work to create incentives for the rural populations to live and work in their own communities.
