Sustainable Development Goals

Taking a Holistic View of the Sustainable Development Goals

THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS ARE A COMMITMENT BY 193 NATIONS TO END POVERTY AND MAKE TRANSFORMATIVE STRIDES TOWARD A FUTURE OF SHARED PROGRESS.

The United States is working to implement the Sustainable Development Goals – known as the SDGs or Global Goals – both domestically and abroad. The U.S. government helped shape the Sustainable Development Goals as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The goals are ambitious, measurable and action-oriented.

To help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, the United States will continue to partner with countries and communities around the world to tackle some of the most intractable problems such as child and maternal death, hunger, gender inequality and climate change.

We will do so in a way that leaves no one behind.

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals are designed to work together. We are taking an holistic approach to achieve the Goals – one that respects and upholds the priorities of the communities in which we work and the people we aim to assist.

“We commit ourselves to new Sustainable Development Goals…we recognize that our most basic bond—our common humanity—compels us to act…we reaffirm that supporting development is not charity, but is instead one of the smartest investments we can make in our own future.”

President Barack Obama, Sept. 27, 2015

Local Capacity

Working with countries to build systems that become self-sufficient over time is the best way to cement development gains for the long-term.
