The USAID-funded Nepal Economic, Agriculture, and Trade Activity (NEAT) is partnering with the Nepal Ministry of Agriculture Development (MOAD) to design and disseminate agricultural training materials nationwide. The materials—263,000 pieces covering 13 crops and 3 types of livestock—include durable handouts and flipcharts aimed at increasing the quantity and quality of agricultural production. The materials are oriented to illiterate and semi-literate populations, using a combination of photos and written descriptions in Nepali to clearly depict and explain critical agriculture practices. The materials will be distributed to Department of Agriculture Training Centres, District Agriculture Development Officers (DADOs), and extension service centers throughout Nepal.

Today, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Deputy Administrator Donald Steinberg and Bangladesh’s Minister of Environment and Forests Dr. Hasan Mahmud jointly announced the launch of the new USAID Climate-Resilient Ecosystems and Livelihoods (CREL) program.  U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh, Dan Mozena and USAID Bangladesh Mission Director, Richard Greene also attended the launch.

Higher Education Partnerships Will Promote Gender Equality and Female Empowerment in Critical Development Sectors

Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and Higher Education for Development (HED) announced its new Women’s Leadership Program. Five universities in the United States have been selected to partner with higher education institutions in Armenia, Paraguay, Rwanda and South Sudan to promote gender equality and women’s leadership.

The U.S. Agency for International Development will hold its annual public meeting of the Advisory Committee on Voluntary Foreign Aid (ACVFA) at The Ronald Regan Building from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 14. Administrator Shah will make opening remarks, followed by a moderated panel discussions among USAID leadership and ACVFA members. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Today, the National Institutes of Health-funded Microbicide Trials Network presented final results from the VOICE HIV prevention clinical trial at the 20th Conference of Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) in Atlanta. The trial has been evaluating two antiretroviral (ARV)-based approaches for preventing the sexual transmission of HIV in women – daily use of one of two different ARV tablets or of a vaginal gel. While the products were found to be safe, it appears that most participants did not use the products daily, as recommended. The U.S. Agency for International Development, through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, contributed support for the VOICE trial through the technical support and vaginal gel provided by one of our partners, CONRAD.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) convened a group of U.S. representatives from information and communication technology (ICT) industry leaders Cisco, Google, HP, Intel, and Microsoft in Yangon and Nay Pyi Taw, Burma. The week-long visit explored a range of joint opportunities for accelerating affordable access to the Internet, strengthening transparent and efficient government, and bolstering skills building.
