America's Rapid Response to the Education Needs of Afghanistan

DATES: February 2002 - April 2004

In 2002, the Afghan Center at the University of Nebraska was approved to begin a 14-month cooperative agreement with USAID designed to assist in the opening of primary and secondary schools in Afghanistan by printing and distributing textbooks in both Dari and Pashtu to all Afghan schools from grades 1 – 12. The project was also committed to in-service teacher training and the production of instructional kits for teachers. The agreement was extended until June 2004. When the project was completed, over 15 million textbooks and 30,000 teacher kits had been produced and distributed to Afghan schools; and 2,740 teachers, 74% of whom are women, and 122 teacher trainers had been trained.
