USAID and GAIN to Develop and Implement Programs for Effective Nutrition Intervention for Mothers and Children in the Critical 1,000 Day Window

NEW YORK, September 20, 2010 – The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) announced today $1 million to expand efforts to reduce the growing burden of malnutrition. The announcement will be made today at a historic gathering of the First Ladies of Africa, who convened to declare nutrition as a critical priority for eliminating poverty, improving health and advancing food security in their nations.

USAID Provides Funding to Higher Education Partnerships to Jointly Address National and Regional Development Challenges; Build In-Country Educational Capacity; Maximize Resources and On-the-Ground Knowledge Between African and U.S. Institutions

WASHINGTON D.C. - The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has provided 13 mobile water treatment units to support the Government of Pakistan's flood relief effort. These water treatment units are stationed on some of the most flood-affected districts and have produced over 7.5 million liters of clean water.

WASHINGTON, DC - Wayne R. Nilsestuen has been sworn in as the Director for U.S. Agency for International Development's Mission in Bolivia. He brings over 30 years of development experience, having worked in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. In addition to his service to USAID, Mr. Nilsestuen was a Peace Corps volunteer for two years in Sierra Leone, West Africa where he started a vocational agricultural program at a secondary school for boys.

WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) held a swearing in ceremony today for Dr. Jim Barnhart as the new Mission Director for Lebanon. Counselor Hilda Arellano presided at the ceremony and administered the oath to Dr. Barnhart.

As Mission Director for Lebanon, Dr. Barnhart will oversee USAID's programs to help the Lebanese strengthen their democratic institutions, promote economic growth, improve education and health services, and support water and environment programs. The USAID/Lebanon budget totals $109 million annually.

Islamabad, August 31, 2010 - The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has provided nearly $2 million to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to support the humanitarian logistics operation and the provision of much-needed emergency relief supplies for health, shelter, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programs. This funding is in addition to the $2.5 million previously provided through the World Food Program for the humanitarian logistics operation.

August 30, 2010 - The United States quick-impact cash-for-work programs to help rehabilitate flood-damaged infrastructure. Flood waters washed out roads and bridges, leaving many villages stranded and unable to get aid. With funding provided by USAID, workers are repairing access paths and tertiary roads so aid can reach those in need.

WASHINGTON, DC - Kevin Kelly has been sworn in as the Mission Director for USAID's Mission in Guatemala. He brings more than 30 years of development experience, having worked on projects in Africa, Latin America, Eastern Europe, and the Former Soviet Union.

In addition to over 25 years of experience as a USAID employee, Kelly has also worked with Chemonics, a USAID implementing partner, where he supervised a large development project in Peru and worked on initiatives involving legal and regulatory reform, judicial partnerships, privatization, and other issues.

First School Officially Opens Today; Project Trains At-Risk and Out-of-School Youth to Convert Shipping Containers into Primary Schools

PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI (August 25, 2010) - The first school built under an innovative public-private partnership was opened today by the Digicel Foundation and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). École Louis de Borno in Léogâne, the town which was epicenter of the earthquake, now stands ready to welcome 600 primary students when the new school year begins on October 4th.
