Gender Responsive Activities in Ethiopia

Global Health Initiative

  • USAID Transform: Primary Health Care: The activity contributes to ending preventable child and maternal deaths and improving engagement with the Government of Ethiopia on the implementation of its new Health Sector Transformation Plan. It will focus primarily in the areas of maternal, newborn, and child health; family planning and reproductive health; and malaria.

  • Strengthening Human Resources for Health: Supports gender equality through a range of activities and programs aimed at pushing back against deep-rooted discriminatory ideas about female students and female professionals. These ideas include limits on a woman’s ability to work outside the house and the belief that women do not belong in traditionally male-dominated fields. In addition to supporting female students, the activity addresses institutional policies, cultures, and norms within systems that may be perpetuating ingrained inequalities. We provide direct funding, capacity building, and technical support to the gender offices of 52 higher education institutions and to student gender clubs.

Democracy and Governance

  • Enhancing the Status of Human Rights Protection and Systems of Good Governance in Ethiopia: This activity addresses gender-based violence through rule of law programming. Justice officials, including police officers, are trained to support victims of gender-based violence, including female genital mutilation, and child marriage. Officials are sensitized in best practices to work with and protect victims, as well as prevent female genital mutilation and child marriage. USAID supports legal aid clinics that also provide victims of gender-based violence with legal assistance. Through such awareness raising and training, USAID programs contribute to creating a more permissive environment for women to report abuse and receive support, in addition to improving the enforcement of laws against gender-based violence, female genital mutilation, and child marriage.
