South Sudan Baseline Survey of Agricultural Practices and Household Conditions

About the Dataset

Though South Sudan is currently one of the world’s poorest countries, it has the potential to be the “breadbasket of Africa” due to its climate and geography. However, a number of issues are currently hindering South Sudan’s agricultural potential, including continuing conflict and insecurity, poor infrastructure, limited government capacity to provide extension services to farmers and a nascent market structure.

USAID is working to address some of these constraints through the Food, Agribusiness, and Rural Markets (FARM) Project, which seeks to increase agricultural sector productivity and marketing in the Greenbelt and to support increasing South Sudan’s food supply to reach food self-sufficiency.

This dataset is derived from a 2013 household baseline survey conducted in South Sudan’s Greenbelt region as part of an impact evaluation of the FARM Project. The dataset contains information on more than 1,200 households on a variety of indicators. It will be compared to a dataset collected in the future on the same individuals in order to measure the project’s effectiveness and its impact on improving agricultural conditions in the Greenbelt region of the country (Central, Western and Eastern Equatoria states). This survey, conducted with USAID assistance, is the first of its kind in South Sudan, helping to build a new body of agricultural data for the country.

The dataset contains information on the following topics:

  • Migration
  • Labor income
  • Housing conditions and access to services
  • Land ownership and use
  • Crop productivity on individually and communally farmed land
  • Farming practices
  • Farm inputs
  • Capital inputs
  • Assets
  • Livestock
  • Income
  • Consumption and expenditure
  • Farming knowledge
  • Farming decisions and division of labor
  • Family businesses
  • Credit and transfers
  • Shocks (such as flood, drought, conflict)
  • Nutrition and hunger

These indicators can be used to measure how the FARM Project has affected community well-being throughout the Greenbelt region by comparing temporal changes in consumption and expenditure, income and hunger levels of households that participated in the project with those that did not. The indicators also provide an indication of how the FARM Project has contributed to improved agricultural practices by farmers in the region by measuring how farming practices, decisions and inputs have changed over time as a result of the project.
